Syndicate presents Cole Lu’s The Third Lie, in the context of Poppositions Brussels 2019.

The artist constructed this suite of new works in an installation specific to the fair venue, a reclaimed industrial site, comprising small sculpture, writing, and performance which builds on her two series from last year, Augusta Prima and Animal Fancy.

In these ‘real fictions’, Cole Lu probes mythic pasts and speculative futures, through classical folklore and the historic promise of time travel. Cole’s references span from legendary Beasts, to the unknown whereabouts of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; in pursuit of a fluid corporeality only possible through exile, testing seclusion’s viability as an alternative from a queer and autobiographical context.

Cole Lu is an artist, curator, and writer originally from Taipei and based in New York. Lu previously collaborated with Syndicate this past year for The Patio, at Arcade Gallery, London UK; and in a performance for Maruša Sagadin’s installation at NADA New York. In 2018, Cole produced solo exhibitions at both 77 Mulberry (New York US) and Monaco, (St Louis US); along with a dual show with André Filipek at American Medium, New York US. They have a forthcoming solo exhibition at Deli Gallery (Brooklyn US) this autumn, and recently completed a four-month residency at Triangle Arts Association, also in New York.

Other recent projects include Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Pulitzer Arts Foundation (St Louis US), Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia US), Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha, US), The Luminary (St Louis, US), Vox Populi (Philadelphia US), The 3rd New Digital Art Biennale ‘The Wrong (Again)’, I Never Read (Basel CH), and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (Los Angeles US). Last year, Cole published Augusta Prima (Endless Editions, New York) a follow-up to the book SMELLS LIKE CONTENT, which is part of the MoMA Library’s Artist Book Collection.

Cole Lu will perform Sepetarians, a new text conceived for The Third Lie, within her installation on Thursday 25 April and Saturday 27 April at 5 PM.
